I read your posting on the Gatlin GenForum
concerning Moses and Chloe
Gatlin and I was wondering if these were
the same people who show up in the 1850
census in Butler County, AL? I am searching
for the parents of Eliza
"Ghatlin",(I believe that her name was misspelled
in the marriage records)
who married Francis Glass on 12/31/1857 in Butler
Co., AL. Frank Glass
was my GGGrandfather. He would have been
approximately 60 years old when he
married Eliza, who was probably 32 at the time
of their marriage. I am
certain that there were other children for Moses
and would like to know if you might have other information on them.
Thanks, Charlie

Thanks for this excellent info! We (there are several
of us working on this
line) have a similiar problem in researching Francis
Glass' parents that you
have had with Moses Gatlin. It seems that
when we get back to the 1700's
information begins to get very sparce.
In a effort to get a better understanding of Francis
Glass, we constructed a
timeline to indicate his travels from NC to TX.
He was born in Mecklenberg
County, NC in about 1797. He married Sarah
Varner, whose parents we have
not located, on 3/13/1822 in Mecklenberg Co. My
GGGrandfather, John Dionysus
Glass, was born on 2/8/1832 in Mecklenberg Co.
In 1833, the family moved to
Selma, AL. In 1838, land sales records indicate
that Francis purchased
39.987 acres in Cahaba, AL, which is about 15
miles south of Selma. The
1840 census shows Francis, Sarah, John D., Mary
A., Benjamin A. and Samuel
in Selma, AL. The 1850 census shows the
family in Lowndes Co., AL.
In 1857, Francis married Eliza "Ghatlin" in Butler
Co., AL on 12/31/1857. I
have felt that the name was misspelled on the
marriage records and it
probably was Gatlin. We also assume that
this means that Sarah Varner Glass
died in the mid 1850s. He would have been
about 60 years of age and she
would have been about 32. The 1860 census
shows Francis, Eliza and Robert
W. H., age 2, AL. The 1870 census shows
Francis, Eliza and son living in
Livingston, TX. The 1880 census show Eliza
Glass and son, William, in
Livingston, TX.
We are currently searching for the burial sites
for both Eliza and Francis
and feel that it is probably in the Livingston,
TX area. There was a
William Glass who was a Texas Ranger in the 1880s
and was from this area in
E. Texas. He was somewhat of a hero and
has a memorial in the Texas Ranger
Hall of Fame in Waco, TX. There is a strong
possibility that he is the son
of Francis and Eliza, but unproven at this time.
